The Buzz — Monday, October 26

The Brewers are up 2-0 and the morning belongs to the arm Tampa Bay just handed the ball to and the catcher who has spent two games taking them apart. The numbers tell you whether either one is slowing down.

Freddy Peralta

The take ALCS MVP starts WS Game 3 vs his former club

The storyline sells itself — eight seasons in Milwaukee, traded in January, and now he draws them in the game the Rays cannot lose. But the reason Kevin Cash handed him the ball down 0-2 is not the symmetry. It is the 0.75 ERA across three ALCS appearances — one run in 12 innings — and the line holds when you widen the lens: two runs in 16 2/3 postseason innings, a 1.08 ERA.

Peralta has been the steadiest arm the Rays have had in October, and the six days' rest is the club spending its last advantage at the moment it matters most. The former-Brewer angle is the chat. The 1.08 ERA is the case.

William Contreras

The take Contreras dominating WS with bat, arm, energy

The crowd is not exaggerating. He is batting .395 with 3 home runs and 7 RBIs over 38 postseason at-bats — production that would anchor a lineup from any position, let alone a catcher logging every inning. Four hits across the first two World Series games, an RBI single in each, and both were one-run wins: 3-2 in Game 1, then 5-4 in Game 2 after erasing a 4-0 deficit.

The half the box score misses is the arm. He threw out two Rays attempting to steal in Game 1, snapping Tampa Bay's perfect postseason stolen-base streak, and he caught 25 basestealers during the regular season — second in the majors. The throws are a season-long fact, not an October spike.

He also won multiple ABS challenges in Game 1 that turned at-bats into strikeouts for his pitchers. Murphy called him the reason they are here, and the evidence is plain: a catcher controlling the game in every channel available to him — the hits, the throws, the challenges — and a 2-0 lead is what it bought.

Monday is the season

The Brewers are up 2-0 because Contreras has controlled every channel and the Rays have not found an answer for any of them. Peralta on six days' rest is Tampa Bay's last clean matchup — a 1.08 ERA arm facing the club he spent eight seasons with — and if he gives the Rays what he gave the Guardians, this is a series again. If he does not, the Brewers take a 3-0 lead and Contreras becomes the name nobody catches.
