Since he was 17, Willy Adames has ended his social media posts with #NoBookBag — a Dominican phrase that means the opposite of showing off. He had signed with the Detroit Tigers the year before, a 16-year-old international free agent for a $400,000 bonus, and the mantra was already the thing he carried. His mother, Ana Sobeida Luna, instilled lessons of humility, respect for others, and avoiding materialistic excess. During the COVID shutdown, she taught him to cook over FaceTime from the Dominican Republic.

A Thousand

On June 19, Adames collected his 1,000th career hit, in his ninth major-league season. He has 1,019 now, across 1,137 games and three clubs. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, he signed with the Tigers at 16. The Rays acquired him in a 2014 three-team trade that sent David Price to Detroit, and got the debut — May 22, 2018, a home run off Chris Sale in his second big-league at-bat. Milwaukee got the middle: four seasons, two Brewers MVP awards in 2021 and 2022, and the version of him former manager Craig Counsell called a unique connector who relates to every corner of the clubhouse. San Francisco got the shortstop who arrived on the largest contract in franchise history — seven years, $182 million, signed in December 2024.

The Kid

Before a 2023 game at Yankee Stadium, Adames met Derek Jeter, his childhood idol, after encouragement from coaches. He was too excited to remember what was said. Then he sparked a Brewers win with a triple that turned into a Little League home run. The bio still lists his nickname as "The Kid." He is 30, still at shortstop for the Giants, with 18 home runs on the season.
