The Seam

One DegreeIn early May, in the worst two weeks his swing had all year, Jonathon Long told FanGraphs he wanted to stop hitting 106-mph grounders to shortstop. Six weeks later his ground balls fell ten points and his line drives went from a fifth of his contact to a third — while the top of his range, the part feverbaseball's engine measures, did not move at all. Scout’s note

A 9th-round pick out of Orange, California in 2023, Long has played 110 Triple-A games this year, hitting .286 with 12 homers and 66 RBI. The engine tracks him but doesn't flag him: his EV95 of 107.93 sits in the 86th percentile of the 439 qualified Triple-A bats we measure, above the 105.0 median. No luck gap prints because that metric needs major-league results and Long hasn't logged any this season. He's hitting the ball hard; what that means against big-league arms is the open question.

Current signals

The read: Long is tracked, not flagged: an EV95 of 108.0 (87th percentile of the 453 qualified Triple-A bats we track; median 105.0). The engine prints no luck gap for him: that number is measured off major-league results and he has none this season, so there is nothing here to call fair or mispriced.
