Built for the Storm
loanDepot park put a retractable roof on the Orange Bowl site and dared the hurricane season to test it.
Gap Mode
The retractable roof at loanDepot park was built for a city that gets hurricanes. Engineering News-Record reported that the roof can hold against 146-mph winds using a gap-mode strategy: the panels park about 10 feet apart in an almost-closed position, which cuts the sail effect and saves roughly 1,000 tons of steel. The park sits in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, on the former site of the Orange Bowl, where the Marlins moved in 2012 after leaving Sun Life Stadium. Its contemporary architectural style was designed to contrast with the red-brick retro look of other recent MLB parks — a building that faced forward, not backward.
The Ground
The outfield is asymmetrical in a way that rewards attention. The right foul pole stands 335 feet from home, nine feet closer than the left pole at 344, but the right-center power alley runs 392 — six feet deeper than left-center at 386. Center is 407. Behind the backstop, two 450-gallon saltwater aquariums stocked with tropical fish sit in fiberglass tanks shielded by material used in bullet-proof glass, per Reuters. A seven-story sculpture called Homer stood in center field until 2019, when it was moved to the plaza outside the park; it still runs at 3:05 p.m. on game days, a nod to Miami's area code. The surface is artificial turf.
What the Roof Saw
The roof's engineering met its comic opposite on Opening Day 2015, when rain fell through the roof's slow closing mechanism while the tarp was stored away. The park had been relying on online weather forecasts that proved unreliable, and the roof simply took too long to close. The building was designed to survive a hurricane; it could not outrun a shower.
The park's first regular-season game had been an Opening Day loss to the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals, 4-1, on April 4, 2012. In March 2017, during the World Baseball Classic, a Dominican Republic game drew 37,446 paying customers, reflecting the park's strong connection to Caribbean baseball and the Latin community.
A naming-rights deal with California-based loan provider loanDepot changed the name from Marlins Park to loanDepot park before the 2021 season. The 2026 season is its 15th of baseball on the ground where the Orange Bowl once stood.
