The Buzz — Sunday, August 30

Five names the box score could not quite contain — an ERA under two, a WAR over nine, a knee that paused a clubhouse, and two bats whose rookie tags are already too small. The number under each settles whether the noise is earned.

Pete Crow-Armstrong

The take Three-homer game boosts his NL MVP case

The 39,597 at Wrigley chanting MVP after his third home run were not getting ahead of the moment. The 4-for-6, six-RBI, three-homer game in a 17-5 win pushed his FanGraphs WAR to 9.1 — he had entered the day already leading baseball at 8.6.

The 444-foot three-run shot in the seventh is the highlight clip. The case is the season: 36 home runs, 32 steals, the first Cub with consecutive 30-30 seasons, eight leadoff homers. Sosa told him before the game he wanted three, and got exactly that. Bregman's comment on the MVP discussion made clear the clubhouse already knows what it thinks of the season. The night did not create the argument — it put it on every screen in the country.

Nick Sogard

The take Sogard strong everyday after multi-hit HRs vs Yankees

Since his July 29 recall from Triple-A Worcester, Sogard has started 23 of 24 games, and the production has kept pace with the volume. He is hitting .264 with a .368 OBP and .773 OPS across 148 at-bats — the on-base skill is what makes the everyday label hold, not a hot week overread into a roster spot.

The Yankees series captured the range: 0-for-5 on August 28, then a doubleheader August 29 with a double and RBI in one game and a solo homer — his third of the season — in the other. His post-recall slash as of August 23 was .299/.421/.448. Tracy called his at-bats and defense enormous. The crowd is right that he has earned the at-bats. Whether .773 OPS and 12 RBI in 148 at-bats holds a regular job when rosters expand is the question.

George Lombard Jr.

The take Rookie exits knee tweak; fans fear injury hit to status

Lombard checked his swing on a Brayan Bello inside pitch in the second, grimaced, stayed in to single, then was pulled before the fourth. Imaging at New York-Presbyterian followed, and Boone said initial results looked promising — day-to-day, no IL stint anticipated. He is hitting .253 with two homers and six RBIs in 23 games since his August 4 promotion, and he is the club's top prospect at short. The fear is fair, but the early reads are precautionary, not structural — Caballero called it not too bad. Day-to-day means what it says until the knee says otherwise.

Jacob Misiorowski

The take Cy Young favorite after historic dominant season

Read the line once and it looks like a decimal error. 1.73 ERA, 222 strikeouts, 0.75 WHIP, and a .150 opponents' batting average across 151 innings in 25 starts. He leads the National League in all four categories and sits second in wins at 14-5.

What the numbers describe is a level of helplessness the league has not solved. A .150 opponent average over 151 innings means the typical hitter steps in and leaves worse than he arrived, and that is before the 222 strikeouts. He has thrown a pitch 105 mph this season — the velocity is the spectacle — but the run prevention is the argument. The Athletic called him the best pitcher in baseball. AP had him as the Cy Young favorite by mid-June, when he was 8-2 with a 1.34 ERA and 131 strikeouts. MLB.com framed the race as his and Cristopher Sánchez's to lose.

He was an All-Star in 2025 as a rookie after five starts, and again in 2026. ESPN lists his WAR at 5.6. The case is not building — it is built. What September decides is whether the innings and the push for October hold the ERA where it sits, and the way hitters have looked says they have no answer.

Sal Stewart

The take Reds rookie power surge nearing 30 homers

Stewart already has 30 home runs and 104 RBI — the surge the crowd was tracking is no longer a chase but a total. He leads the National League in RBI and ranks fifth in home runs, league-wide standings, not rookie-only leaderboards.

The number that settles it is 104 — first in the NL in runs driven in, in his first full season after debuting September 1, 2025. He passed Jim Greengrass's franchise rookie record of 100 set in 1953. The full line — .265 average, .337 OBP, .821 OPS, 12 steals over 521 at-bats — is a middle-of-the-order bat, not a streak. On August 28, his 29th home run and two RBIs pushed him past 100 and past Greengrass in a Reds win over the Cubs. Teammates and manager have called it remarkable, and Rookie of the Year is the floor.

Three races already run

Three of these five are National League players, and all three are running away with the sport's hardware. Misiorowski's 1.73 ERA has the Cy Young. Crow-Armstrong's 9.1 WAR is the MVP. Stewart's 104 RBI are Rookie of the Year. None is close enough to call a race. The open question is in the Bronx, where a 21-year-old shortstop's right knee and a day-to-day designation mean the Yankees' infield picture resolves when the imaging does, not when the standings do.
