The Quiet One

As a young child, Bryan Reynolds was so quiet that his older sister Amanda served as his communicator — right up through first grade. His father Greg once wondered whether his son would ever speak on his own.

He speaks now, but not much more than he has to. On May 6, 2026, Reynolds collected his 1,000th career hit, every one of them in a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform.

The Only Team He's Known

The San Francisco Giants drafted him 59th overall out of Vanderbilt in 2016. In January 2018 they traded him to Pittsburgh with Kyle Crick for Andrew McCutchen. Reynolds debuted on April 20, 2019 — against the Giants — and recorded a hit. He has been a Pirate ever since: eight seasons, 1,051 games, a .272 average, 152 home runs, 219 doubles. Two All-Star selections, in 2021 and 2024.

He arrived at Vanderbilt lightly recruited, a high school shoulder injury dimming his profile, and helped the Commodores win the 2014 College World Series as a freshman. Coach Tim Corbin called him one of the most consistent players the program had and "a treasure." Former Pirates manager Clint Hurdle described a dependable ballplayer who quietly does his job with pride.

When Reynolds was three or four, Greg bought a bass boat for Percy Priest Lake, near their home in the Nashville area, planning to fish with his boy. The kid found a plastic bat and foam balls in the yard instead. The boat sat until it filled with water and became a planter.

Reynolds is 31, a switch-hitting outfielder still playing for the Pirates, still living near Nashville with his wife Blair and their children. He still fishes with his father in the offseason.
