The Name on the Brim

José Ramírez reached 1,000 RBI in his 1,727th game, the same franchise that signed him as a fill-in at a showcase for $50,000.

The Fill-In

As a boy in Baní, José Ramírez crossed the river to a rocky, weedy dirt lot and played vitilla with neighborhood kids — water-jug caps for baseballs, sticks for bats, a glove too tight for his hand. He was the eldest son of Sito and Silveria Mateo Ramírez, growing up poor. By 13 he had dropped out of school and was playing adult leagues under pressure that included a machete behind home plate. His father, a former player, told him he was the family's way out of poverty. His grandmother Santa Ramírez raised him and taught him to share what he had.

At a 2009 showcase he was a fill-in — 17 years old, 5-foot-8, overlooked for his size and his age. He collected three hits one day, three the next, and five in a doubleheader. Scout Ramon Peña pressed Cleveland's scouting director John Mirabelli until the club signed the switch-hitter for $50,000.

One Organization

He debuted September 1, 2013, and has spent his entire career with one franchise — three seasons as a Cleveland Indian, eleven as a Guardian. Fourteen years, one organization, playing third base. Seven All-Star teams, six Silver Slugger awards. A switch-hitter with 297 home runs, 424 doubles, and 321 stolen bases. Teammates and coaches describe a player who arrives early and studies the game intensely. On September 18, 2026, at 34, in his 1,727th game, he drove in his 1,000th career run.

Santa

She died in 2023. After a three-home-run game that included his 200th career blast, he declined to auction the hat for charity. He had written Santa's name on the brim and could not part with it.

He has funded the refurbishing of his childhood field in Baní and partnered on a $2.7 million youth field bearing his name in Cleveland's largest Hispanic neighborhood.
