A Thousand Two Hundred

On July 19, 2026, Manny Machado drove in his 1,200th career run. The number belongs to a career that began in Baltimore on August 9, 2012, when he was twenty years old, and has run through Los Angeles and into San Diego, where he is now in his eighth season. Fifteen years, 1,993 games, 391 home runs, 412 doubles, a .275 average.

The Milk and the Dirt

He grew up in Hialeah, in a Dominican family, raised by his mother Rosa, his grandfather Francisco Nunez, and his uncle Geovanny Brito. Nunez woke him every morning at six with a glass of warm milk. The grandfather rarely stayed up for night games — early bedtime — but Machado would knock on his door afterward to report how he'd played. Nunez told him to learn to bunt, to be a complete player. Machado still draws the initials FN in the dirt before every game.

Baltimore took him third overall in the 2010 draft out of Brito Miami Private School, signing him for $5.25 million. Born in the United States, Machado represents the Dominican Republic in international competition and was named Pool C MVP of the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

What Accrued

Seven years in Baltimore, where two Gold Gloves came in 2013 and 2015. A stint with the Dodgers in 2018. Eight years and counting in San Diego, where three Silver Sluggers have followed: 2020, 2024, and 2025. Seven All-Star teams across the whole run.

Padres third-base coach Matt Williams has pointed to Machado's attention to detail, his routine, and the way he pulls teammates aside during games to mentor them.

He is 34 years old, with 1,203 runs batted in, in his eighth year with the Padres.
