On June 28, 2026, Shane Bieber struck out his 1,000th batter. He has 1,014 now, in 907 career innings, with a 3.30 ERA. Nine seasons, three uniforms — the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Guardians, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Layaway

Andrew Checketts brought Bieber to UC Santa Barbara as a preferred walk-on, with a promise that the money would come in year two if he performed. Bieber earned a weekend rotation spot as a freshman. His velocity was modest. His command was not. He became the staff ace, helped UCSB reach the College World Series, and Cleveland drafted him in the fourth round in 2016. He debuted on May 31, 2018 — his 23rd birthday.

The Cy Young came in 2020. He was a two-time All-Star, the Ted Williams All-Star Game MVP in 2019, and won an AL Gold Glove in 2022.

The Long Way Back

Between Cleveland and Toronto, Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery. The rehabilitation ran through Goodyear, Arizona, and lasted long enough that he and his wife Kara learned they were expecting their first child during it. He attended every appointment. Their son Kav was born March 14, 2025. Bieber credited his family — parents Chris and Kristine, brother Travis, and his in-laws — for keeping him patient rather than rushing back.

When he returned to a mound with the Buffalo Bisons, he bought steak and lobster for the clubhouse, set up a coffee cart, and shagged balls during batting practice. Teammate Adam Macko called him an open book, willing to share what he knew about focus and consistency.

Bieber has appeared in five games for Toronto this season. He is 31 years old, in his ninth major-league year.
