The immaculate inning

Ryan Jeffers never saw a strike.

He came up with one out in the fourth, and Gavin Williams threw him three sweepers — 88.6, 87.9, 88.9 — and every one of them finished outside the rulebook zone. Jeffers swung at all three. He missed all three. Three swinging strikes on three pitches a patient man could have watched go by.

That was the middle third of an immaculate inning: nine pitches, three strikeouts, and Williams never threw a ball. Byron Buxton went first, on a sinker at 96 for a called strike, a sweeper he fouled off, and a four-seamer at 98.8 that he foul-tipped into the catcher's mitt for strike three. Josh Bell went last, and Williams showed him an 82.7 curveball for a called strike before coming back with 99.2 and then 99.2 again — the last one a sinker, off the zone, that Bell swung through.

The part the box score doesn't say

An immaculate inning is defined by outcomes, not by location. Nine pitches, three strikeouts, and every pitch a strike. But a strike there means a strike was recorded: a foul ball counts, and so does a swing and a miss, wherever the ball actually was.

So we went and looked at where the nine crossed. Measured against each hitter's own strike zone, as the official tracking recorded it:

Buxton's first-pitch sinker was one. Bell's first-pitch curveball was the other. The other seven were balls that nobody ever called a ball, because each time the hitter took the decision out of the umpire's hands: four swings and misses, three foul balls. Jeffers's whole at-bat is in that seven.

Williams did not paint nine corners that inning. He made three major-league hitters chase, and all three chased.

The night around it

Williams went seven innings, gave up two hits, walked nobody, and struck out eleven. Ninety-seven pitches, seventy-three of them strikes. He left with a shutout intact.

Cleveland lost 3–1 in twelve innings. Williams got a no-decision.

Williams is 26 and six-foot-six, out of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Cleveland took him 23rd overall in 2021. The start moved his season line to 126.1 innings and 156 strikeouts across 21 starts, with a 3.78 ERA.
