Bobby Witt Jr. was a first-round pick in 2019 out of Colleyville, Texas, and at 26 he is hitting the ball harder than 96% of qualified major-league hitters — an EV95 of 110.66 against a league median of 105.8. The Royals shortstop is also stealing his way to third in baseball with 45 bags at 30.1 feet per second, which means the gap between his physics and his .281 average is doing real work in the wrong direction. His results on contact sit further below his exit velocities than 92% of the sample, a luck gap of -0.0479 that tells you balls are finding gloves. That combination — elite contact quality, suppressed results, plus the speed to stretch what does land — is the breakout shape, and the engine has him No. 9 of 20 on that board.
