Louis Varland

Scout’s note

Varland is in the Index on purpose without a board grade — the stuff model is stability-tested but not outcome-validated, so no arm gets flagged from it, even after a season like this. A 15th-round pick out of St. Paul, 28 years old, he's posted a 1.27 ERA across 78 innings for Toronto with 35 saves, seventh in baseball. The ERA-FIP gap did clear the bar for a hand-filed regression call. The page is here because the player matters; the science catches up when it can.

Current signals

The read: Varland is in the Index ungraded, on purpose: our stuff model is stability-tested but not outcome-validated, so no big-league arm gets a board flag from it — not even one of the best seasons in the sport. (Calls are another matter: the ERA-FIP luck gap did clear the bar, and we file arm regression calls by hand from it.) The page is here because the player matters; the board grade waits for the science.
