Scout’s note

A third-round pick out of the 2021 draft, the Pittsburgh-born Miller has been one of the most dominant arms in the sport — 92 strikeouts across 50.1 innings with a 0.89 ERA and 30 saves for San Diego. The Index carries him ungraded by design: our stuff model holds up under stability testing but hasn't cleared outcome validation, so no arm gets a board flag from it yet. The ERA-FIP luck gap, though, cleared our bar by hand.

Current signals

The read: Miller is in the Index ungraded, on purpose: our stuff model is stability-tested but not outcome-validated, so no big-league arm gets a board flag from it — not even one of the best seasons in the sport. (Calls are another matter: the ERA-FIP luck gap did clear the bar, and we file arm regression calls by hand from it.) The page is here because the player matters; the board grade waits for the science.

A base salary under his own reading, and never subtracted from the cash figure above: a signing bonus lands in one and not the other, so the two disagree on most men without either being wrong. And the sheet does not mark which future seasons are GUARANTEED — a club option and a projected arbitration award are both just a number here, so read past the end of the deal as his forecast rather than as money owed.

Two sources, read a month apart, put this guarantee at the same dollar. That is the check, and it passed.

The tax AAV above is his number under the CBA’s own rulebook, not the average we work out from Cot’s total. On a contract with deferred money the two come apart on purpose — and neither is subtracted from the other.

The Bureau on Mason Miller

The scouting press, in their own words

I would do unspeakable things to get RSNs to realize there should be the option to watch entire games from this angle. Here's Mason Miller vs Francisco Lindor from the Mets-Padres 9th inning. 102 mph up in the zone looks insane. https://t.co/ygLOAzd1a2

Made an MLB trade deadline video where I sent Tarik Skubal to the Rays and Mason Miller to the Pirates (chaos!). 🤯 Fun exercise attempting to calculate the postseason value of pitchers based on team playoff odds. Tease below, full video linked in thread! https://t.co/quuHLvZt5t
