The eighth inning was where this game stopped being competitive. Sam Moll walked two without recording an out, Kyle Nicolas gave up two hits and three runs, and Mike Trout walked with the bases loaded to force in a run before Jorge Soler cleared them with a grand slam at 110.4 mph, 418 feet to left center. Jack Kochanowicz had already done the heavy lifting — seven innings, two hits, one run — and Zach Neto's two-run homer in the fourth on a 98.6 mph fastball had given him a lead to work with. Chase Burns took the loss with 5.1 innings and five earned runs, and the Cincinnati bullpen allowed five more in the eighth.
