A park built around a number, a wall, and a river — and the afternoon it opened with Pittsburgh in mourning.

The First Day

On the morning of April 9, 2001, Willie Stargell died at 61. That afternoon, PNC Park opened for its first regular-season game, and a Pittsburgh native named Sean Casey — playing for the visiting Reds — hit the ballpark's first home run over the right-field wall and drove in five runs. Cincinnati won 8-2 before a sellout crowd of 36,954. The wall Casey cleared stands 21 feet high, built to honor Roberto Clemente, who wore number 21.

The Ground

The first double-decker ballpark built since 1953, PNC Park sits on Pittsburgh's North Shore, faced in cream-colored limestone and blue steel, oriented toward the skyline and the Allegheny River. HOK Sport (now Populous) and L.D. Astorino and Associates designed it at a total cost of $262 million, including land. The playing surface is 96,750 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass, replacing the artificial turf of Three Rivers Stadium. The field plays uneven: 325 feet down the left-field line, 410 to the North Side Notch in left-center, 320 down the right-field line.

Twenty-Six Seasons

The 2026 season is the 26th at PNC Park. The Pirates are the only club to have called it home. The place has held the 2006 All-Star Game, an 18-inning Pirates win over the Astros in May of that year, and three consecutive National League Wild Card Games from 2013 through 2015. Andrew McCutchen's name sits across the park's record board — 751 hits, 92 home runs, 357 RBIs, all career bests at PNC. The right-field wall still stands 21 feet, the same height it was the day Casey hit one over it.
