The boy from San Pedro de Macorís played on rocky infields full of pebbles and stones and slid into bases anyway — scraped knees, bruised elbows, badges of honor among his friends. His mother, Maria, remembered that whenever she took him to a toy store he wanted a bat or a glove, never an actual toy. His father, Fernando Tatis Sr., had been a major-league third baseman, and the boy grew up inside clubhouses, taking grounders from Robinson Canó, watching his father round the bases with a big smile. That was the picture he carried.

On June 9, 2026, Fernando Tatis Jr. scored his 500th career run. He has spent all seven of his major-league seasons with the San Diego Padres — the team that acquired him before he ever appeared in a professional game, when the White Sox traded the 17-year-old for James Shields in June 2016. He debuted on March 28, 2019, and has logged 772 games since.

What the Number Holds

Five hundred runs in seven seasons means getting on base and coming all the way around: 833 hits, 149 stolen bases, a .354 on-base percentage, across a career that has not yet turned 28. The defense in the outfield drew its own attention — two Gold Gloves and two Platinum Gloves alongside two Silver Slugger seasons. At 18 with the Fort Wayne TinCaps, broadcasters saw multiple highlight plays from him in a single half-inning, and opposing announcers visited the booth just to marvel.

Padres manager Craig Stammen has called him a leader who makes plays all over the field even when he is not hitting well. Five hundred runs is a number built across seasons that asked different things of him, and he found ways to score through all of them.

He is 27, an outfielder for the Padres, with 528 runs and counting.
