A Hundred Saved

Tanner Scott collected his 100th career save on September 8, 2026, closing a game for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He reached the number in his tenth major-league season, across four teams, without ever starting a game. In 507 career appearances, he has 618 strikeouts in 484 innings.

Howland

Scott grew up in Howland Township near Youngstown, Ohio. His mother Bette played softball and basketball — the family athlete — and his older brother Tyler played football at Northwestern and signed with the Minnesota Vikings. As a freshman at Howland High School, Tanner nearly failed to make the baseball team and saw little varsity time. He was undersized, and coaches hoped he would grow into his brother's frame. The growth came. Under former big leaguer Jason Stanford, Scott's velocity exploded in his senior year after summer workouts, turning him from a fringe player into a prospect. He played one season at Notre Dame College in Ohio, transferred to Howard College in Texas — where his fastball touched 98 mph — and Baltimore drafted him in the sixth round in 2014.

The Late Innings

The Orioles called him up in September 2017 and used him strictly in relief. Five seasons in Baltimore, then three in Miami, where Mel Stottlemyre Jr. praised his hard-earned transformation into a dominant reliever. He was an All-Star in 2024, the same season that took him through San Diego. The Dodgers signed him before 2025.

Ryan Mountcastle, a former Orioles teammate, noted that a left-hander throwing 100 mph will always find work. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has described Scott as an assassin on the mound. This season, his second in Los Angeles, Scott has 22 saves and 72 strikeouts in 63 games.

Scott is 32, in his second season with the Dodgers.
