Ty France is having one of his best seasons — .295, 21 home runs, a .865 OPS for the Padres — and the engine says the barrel doesn't quite cover it. His EV95 of 106.42 barely clears the league median of 105.8, and the luck gap of 0.0509 puts his results ahead of his contact more than 96 percent of the 406 qualified hitters we track — No. 15 of 15 on the fade board. A 34th-round pick in 2015 out of Downey, California, France has scratched out 973 MLB games and 102 home runs, the kind of career that earns a man 133 games at first base for a contender. But his sprint speed is 24.7, and a slow first baseman whose line outruns his barrel has fewer ways to keep it there. The gap is the smallest of the 15 on the board, but the position and the profile leave him the least room to absorb a correction.
