The Good Fall

Héctor Rodríguez dropped four spots on the fade board — and that's the best news he's gotten all fall.

The good fall

Héctor Rodríguez dropped four spots on our fade board this window, from No. 4 to No. 8, and most readers saw that and thought: worse. On the Fade board, a fall runs the other way. The engine is easing off him — his results drifting back toward what his bat supports. Good news for Rodríguez, and the engine agreeing with anyone still bullish on the kid.

He's still flagged. His luck gap sits at 0.0727, which means his stat line still runs ahead of what his contact quality has earned. The verdict on the player page reads PAID. But a month ago that gap was 0.0793, and the direction matters. The gap is closing. Not because his line cratered, but because his contact is catching up to it.

The kid from Santo Domingo

His father, also named Héctor Rodríguez, signed with the San Diego Padres once. Never made it to organized baseball. The son grew up watching the example — the swing, the work, a life spent in the game — and when money got tight in Santo Domingo, he was 13 when he decided baseball was how he'd help his family. Not a dream. A decision.

The Mets signed him in January 2021 for $100,000. A year and a half later they shipped him to Cincinnati with Jose Acuña for Tyler Naquin and Phillip Diehl. He was 18. He felt the sadness of leaving the only organization that had believed in him, the worry that he'd have to start over. The Reds moved him from second base to the outfield. He broke his ankle, lost his speed, and worked to get it back.

He debuted August 4 of this year, recalled from Triple-A Louisville, and his first 41 games — .229, six home runs, .680 OPS — look like a 22-year-old left-handed bat learning the league. They also look like a hitter who got in his own head early, until Elly De La Cruz and Eugenio Suárez pulled him aside and told him to go play his game and be himself. He hit better after that. He plays for his family, and for his late uncle Fausto Valdez, who he says will be the proudest of all when he establishes himself in the big leagues.

Right now he's back home, practicing with Leones del Escogido — the same club where he won LIDOM Rookie of the Year. He's 22. He's working.

What the engine still sees

Rodríguez's EV95 is 108.86 mph across 309 balls in play. That bat is real. A .680 OPS on that contact is still borrowing against it. The gap has narrowed, but it hasn't closed. He's No. 8 of 15 on the fade board, and he carries an aaa_hitters tag, which means the profile has gaps the majors will keep testing.

The chatter online is blunt. Most of it puts him in the not-good-enough category for a Reds playoff team among their 40-man roster. A contrarian few see a right-field platoon with Spencer Steer. The engine doesn't have an opinion on platoons. It has an opinion on the gap between his bat and his line, and that opinion is getting softer — a harder thing to say than he's bad or he's good, and a more useful one.

The market

His 2023 Bowman Chrome Prospects rookie card — the BCP-95 — sits at $2.25 raw and $30.52 in a PSA 10. The 2025 Panini Prizm Sensational Signature Green is at $11.39 raw and $45.99 PSA 10. Both have been flat for weeks. The market is waiting. The engine is waiting too — less aggressively than a month ago, but waiting.

On the record

If Rodríguez's luck gap stalls at or above 0.0727 through the winter league season and into spring training, the gap stopped narrowing and the engine eased off too soon. We'll know by Opening Day 2027.

If the gap keeps closing, the kid from Santo Domingo is doing what the engine hoped: turning hard contact into a line that earns it. His father never made it. His uncle won't see it. He's 22, and he's going home to work.
