Matthew Boyd struck out ten in five and two-thirds innings of two-hit baseball and threw 98 pitches, and by the time he left the Cubs had scored five in the third and the Angels had not yet scored at all. The third inning was the whole game: Hoerner doubled in a run on a 96.3 mph fastball, Bregman singled in another, Swanson's sacrifice fly brought home a third, and Shaw and Crow-Armstrong each added RBI singles. Yusei Kikuchi walked four and gave up five earned in five and a third, and the Angels did not score until the sixth. The Angels' first run scored on a single deflected by second baseman Nico Hoerner.
