Oneil Cruz hit an 81 mph sweeper 407 feet in the first, and giving Paul Skenes three runs before he settles in is a rough way to open a night. He gave up one earned over five innings — 51 strikes out of 77 — and left leading. The Reds got within a run in the sixth on Eugenio Suárez's 410-foot homer, and for three innings the score sat 4-3, Cincinnati five hits in and never the one that ties it. Then Emilio Pagán threw 33 pitches in the ninth. Bryan Reynolds's home run left the bat at 107.7 mph, Nick Gonzales drove in two more, and a one-run game finished five. Three innings within a run, and the hit never came.
