The first inning produced six runs — three on Ian Happ's homer to right center, three on Nelson Velázquez's first of the season to left center — and then the game narrowed. Thomas Saggese's first home run of the year in the fourth cut the margin to one, and Iván Herrera's seventh of the season in the fifth put St. Louis ahead to stay. Shota Imanaga took the loss: 5.1 innings, 5 runs, 75 pitches, two strikeouts. José Fermín's RBI single in the eighth gave the Cardinals the insurance they needed, because Michael Busch's groundout in the ninth brought Chicago within one and the inning ended there. Eight left on base for the Cubs. Andre Pallante gave up four runs in three innings and still got a no-decision because the bullpen behind him threw six scoreless.
