The Cubs had one hit in nine innings. Cade Cavalli pitched eight of them — one hit, two walks, ten strikeouts, 103 pitches — and turned it over to Clayton Beeter for the ninth. Kevin Gausman was gone by the fifth, having allowed six earned on seven hits. Abimelec Ortiz hit a three-run homer to center, his fourth, and Dylan Crews doubled in the first run. The Nationals scored five in the fifth and added one more in the eighth. Gausman threw 93 pitches and did not finish the fifth.
