Right-Center, Past the Wall

The right-center field gap at Chase Field measures 414 feet from home plate, and just beyond it sits a swimming pool — 415 feet out, rented as a suite that holds up to 35 guests. On May 12, 1998, Mark Grace became the first player to reach it on the fly, a home run that landed in water. It sits inside a structure that was already doing something no American ballpark had done before.

A Roof Over Grass

Construction began in 1996. The park opened in 1998 in downtown Phoenix, a block from where the NBA's Phoenix Suns played at America West Arena, as the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was the first MLB stadium in the United States to feature a retractable roof over a natural grass playing surface. The playing surface is now artificial turf.

The dimensions run 328 down the left-field line, 376 to left, 412 to left-center, 407 to center, 376 to right, and 335 down the right-field line — deep in the gaps, generous to center. A dirt strip between home plate and the pitcher's mound, known as the keyhole, was a feature of the field until it was removed in 2019.

Travis Lee put on a show for the inaugural game on March 31, 1998, against the Colorado Rockies, recording the franchise's first single, home run, and RBI.

Four Home Wins

The moment that anchors the building came in its fourth season. Chase Field hosted Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 of the 2001 World Series against the New York Yankees, and the Diamondbacks won all four home games — taking the title in seven and denying the Yankees a fourth consecutive championship. The park also hosted the All-Star Game in 2011.

The Diamondbacks remain the only club to call it home.
