Comerica Park dropped its playing field 25 feet below downtown Detroit, now in its 27th season as home of the Tigers.

Below the Street

The playing field at Comerica Park sits 25 feet below street level. HOK Sport (now Populous), which designed the ballpark in the retro-classic style Camden Yards had popularized, dropped the surface down so the main concourse runs above the field. Comerica Park opened on April 11, 2000, with 39,168 fans filling the place for opening day against the Seattle Mariners. It sits in downtown Detroit near Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, and the Fox Theater, and the 2026 season is its 27th.

Center field measures 412 feet from home plate. Left-center is 370, right-center 365, and the lines run 342 down the left side and 330 down the right. Along the left-center field wall, six stainless-steel sculptures of Tiger Hall of Famers — Ty Cobb, Al Kaline, and Hank Greenberg among them — stand as the work of sculptor Omri Amrany, installed when the park opened in 2000.

What Happened Here

On October 14, 2006, Magglio Ordóñez hit a walk-off home run against the Oakland Athletics to complete an ALCS sweep and send the Tigers to their first World Series since 1984. It is widely regarded as the greatest moment in the park's history. The same field later held Justin Verlander's first career no-hitter — 12 strikeouts against the Milwaukee Brewers on June 12, 2007, aided by a sliding catch from Ordóñez — and Miguel Cabrera's 3,000th hit on April 23, 2022, a milestone reached on the field where more than 1,000 of those hits had been recorded.

Before the 2024 season, a new videoboard exceeding 15,000 square feet went up above left field. The sculptures along the wall are still standing, and the Tigers are still the only club that has called this park home.
