Pittsburgh held a lead from the fourth through the eighth, and Eduardo Valencia's two-run homer in the ninth — his seventh of the season — put Detroit ahead for the first time. Justin Verlander threw 91 pitches in 5.1 innings and left down 2-0, and the Tigers' first run came on a Báez double in the sixth. Mason Montgomery gave up three hits and three earned in two-thirds of an inning, and Bryan Reynolds' eighth-inning triple was the last run the Pirates managed.
