The take Twins calling up top prospect Jenkins for debut amid Buxton injury

The parallel the crowd can't help drawing is the one the franchise lived through already — a 21-year-old outfielder arriving to fix something a Buxton injury broke. Jenkins doesn't turn 22 until February, which makes him the youngest Twins position player to debut since Buxton himself in 2015. The echo is exact enough to be uncomfortable, and the club knows it.

What earned the promotion is not the echo. Over 69 games at Triple-A St. Paul, Jenkins hit .308 with a .939 OPS, 12 homers and 17 steals, and the last month is where the case hardened — a 1.072 OPS over his final 31 games, eight home runs in his last 15, three multi-homer games since Aug. 6. That is a bat forcing the timeline, not a roster patch.

The open question is the one the stat line can't settle. Jenkins has not played more than 84 games in any professional season — a shoulder strain cost him two months this year after he collided with the center-field wall, and injuries have shortened him in consecutive years. The bat is ready. The body has not yet been asked to prove it over a full season, and a debut in August does not change that — it just means the asking starts now, with less margin than anyone would like.

The take Emotional first start back vs Tigers after trade

The Friday start at Comerica is the headline, and the emotion is real — Skubal called the trade a "roller coaster" and said leaving Detroit teammates who are "some of my best friends" was tough. He won consecutive AL Cy Young Awards there in 2024 and 2025, which is the part that makes this more than a homecoming: the Tigers traded a two-time reigning Cy Young winner at the deadline for three prospects, and now he walks back in wearing Dodger gray.

The early returns say the arm traveled. Through four starts with the Dodgers, Skubal has a 3.38 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 24 innings, and his most recent outing was seven innings with 11 strikeouts against Pittsburgh. That is solid if not yet the form that won two Cy Youngs. The number to watch Friday is whether the 3.38 holds or climbs.

The take Multi-homer multi-RBI outburst powers Brewers win

The rest day did exactly what a rest day is supposed to do. Chourio came off his first break since the All-Star Game and went 4-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs, four runs and a steal in an 8-2 win over the Mets — his third multi-homer game of 2026 and the fifth of his career at 22. The season line after: .283 with 19 homers, 54 RBIs and 14 steals in 99 games for a first-place club. He had been 0-for-5 with two strikeouts the day before the rest. What the break did was reset a heavy stretch, and the outburst was a young player returning to his baseline — just louder.

The take CG shutout completes Braves sweep of Dodgers

The number that settles this is not on the scoreboard — it is 100.1 mph, the fastball Sale threw to Shohei Ohtani, his hardest pitch since 2018. A 37-year-old in the ninth inning, on his hardest pitch in eight years, is not hanging on. He told manager Walt Weiss "This is mine," threw 109 pitches — 80 for strikes — and finished with five hits, no walks and 11 strikeouts in a 1-0 game that completed the sweep.

His first shutout since June 5, 2019. At 37 years and 150 days, he became one of the oldest pitchers since 1900 with a 10-strikeout, zero-walk shutout. The ERA dropped to 2.06, second-best in baseball. The sweep of the Dodgers is the part the standings hold; the velocity is the part that says this is not nostalgia — it is the best pitching in the league right now, at an age where it is not supposed to be.

Jac Caglianone

The take Huge 5-hit 6-RBI homer game for Royals slugger

Career highs in hits and RBIs, but the game was already gone. Caglianone went 5-for-6 with a home run, a double and six RBIs in a 13-2 win over the Blue Jays — his 23rd homer of the season — and set personal bests in both. A five-hit, six-RBI night is a real line, and the career highs are genuine. But the margin was decided before most of the damage was done.
