Signed Baseballs

Reid Detmers grew up in Nokomis, Illinois, collecting signed baseballs from his father's minor-league teammates. Kris Detmers pitched several seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals system and reached Triple-A Memphis around the time Reid was born in July 1999. Detmers rooted for the Cardinals as a kid, and David Freese's 2011 World Series performance stood out as a formative fandom moment. The family home was filled with baseball stories.

Atlanta drafted him in the 32nd round out of high school; he honored his commitment to the University of Louisville instead. At Louisville he majored in sport administration and listed his father as the greatest influence on his athletic career. The Angels took him 10th overall in 2020, and he signed for $4.67 million.

500 career strikeouts arrived on March 28, 2026 — Detmers' sixth season, all with the Angels. He debuted August 1, 2021, and has logged 569.1 major-league innings since.

The Eleventh Start

The no-hitter came in his 11th major-league start. Afterward, his father heard from Kent Mercker, a former big-leaguer working as one of Reid's agents, who pointed out that Mercker had also thrown a no-hitter in his 11th career start. The kind of detail that sticks to a family already full of baseball.

The Angels sent Detmers down mid-2022 after the no-hitter high faded. In the minors, instructor Buddy Carlyle spotted a mechanical flaw in a short film session and helped him correct it. Detmers came back and threw an immaculate inning before the year was out.

The Count

A 4.62 career ERA, a 24-38 record, 157 appearances — 96 starts, three saves. Six seasons, one team. The count has already moved past the milestone: 634 career strikeouts. He is 27, still pitching for the Angels, with 136 strikeouts already this season.
