A triple is supposed to be a line drive into the gap, a ball off the wall, something hit hard enough to leave the fielder no play. Tristan Peters hit his on the ground, to Lawrence Butler in right, and by the time the ball was fielded and thrown and cut and thrown again, Andrew Benintendi had crossed the plate and Peters was standing on third base.
The double came first — a line drive to center fielder Henry Bolte, Peters's 20th of the season. Then a single — a grounder to right that Butler charged and first baseman Joey Meneses deflected, a ball that scored Benintendi and sent Kyle Teel to second. Then the home run, a fly ball to right-center, Teel aboard, his 6th of the year. Three kinds of hit, three different parts of the field, and one kind still missing.
Four hits. Ten total bases. Four RBI. Three of the four for extra bases. The White Sox beat the Athletics 14-1 at Rate Field, and Peters drove in four of his team's fourteen runs.
What a cycle demands is all four types of hit gathered in one game, in any order. What makes it rare is not the pieces that happen every night. Singles, doubles, home runs — those are the furniture of a box score. The triple is the gate, the one piece the whole thing cannot survive without. Peters had collected the other three. He needed the hardest one last.
