Scout’s note

Peters has been on a tear — .372 with a 1.263 OPS and five home runs in his last 14 games — but his EV95 of 103.7 is more than two ticks below the league median of 105.9. The 0.0575 luck gap puts him ahead of more than 98% of the 372 qualified hitters we track, No. 10 on the fade board, and the recent streak has stretched the distance between his contact and his results. He's 26, from Winkler, Manitoba, a seventh-round pick in 2021 who debuted this August and has already played 127 big-league games — a fast ramp for a player from a cold-weather Canadian town. He's left-handed, 6'0" and 180 pounds, with 285 balls in play this season and only 72 strikeouts, and the engine respects the discipline. What it doesn't trust is an .802 OPS holding up when the hardest contact is this soft.

Current signals

The read: Peters's results are outrunning his contact by more than 99% of the 373 qualified MLB hitters we track — an EV95 of 103.7 (league median 105.8) doesn't usually buy this stat line. Gaps like his tend to close from above; No. 6 of 15 on the fade board.

A base salary under his own reading, and never subtracted from the cash figure above: a signing bonus lands in one and not the other, so the two disagree on most men without either being wrong. And the sheet does not mark which future seasons are GUARANTEED — a club option and a projected arbitration award are both just a number here, so read past the end of the deal as his forecast rather than as money owed.

Two sources, read a month apart, put this guarantee at the same dollar. That is the check, and it passed.

The tax AAV above is his number under the CBA’s own rulebook, not the average we work out from Cot’s total. On a contract with deferred money the two come apart on purpose — and neither is subtracted from the other.
