Valdez hits the ball hard — an EV95 of 110.64, nearly five ticks above the league median of 105.9 — and yet even that authority is being outpaced by a .905 OPS and 15 home runs in 62 games. The 0.0625 luck gap puts him ahead of more than 98% of the 372 qualified hitters we track, No. 7 on the fade board. He's 22, from San Juan La Maguana in the Dominican Republic, and he debuted this past May — which means every number here is from his first taste of the majors. At 6'2" and 234 pounds, he's a built man who has struck out 93 times against 139 balls in play, and that swing-and-miss is the countervailing force the engine respects: the power is real, but the average may have nowhere to go but toward the contact.
