Scout’s note

Yordan Alvarez is the exception on this board — a star, not a sleeper — but the engine still sees daylight between what he's hitting and what he's showing. His EV95 of 112.265 is higher than 99 percent of the 372-hitter sample, a number almost nobody in baseball touches, yet his results on contact run below the physics further than 88 percent of the group. The luck gap of -0.0436 is the smallest on the breakout board, which makes sense: when you're hitting .323 with 36 home runs and 91 RBI, the stat line is already doing most of the work the physics predicts. A 29-year-old from Las Tunas with a .977 career OPS and 206 career home runs, Alvarez leads the league in batting average and ranks second in home runs. The reason he's No. 10 on the breakout board and not higher is that there isn't much gap left to close — but the engine says there's still some.

Current signals

The read: Alvarez is hitting the ball harder than 99% of the 373 qualified MLB hitters in our sample (EV95 112.3; league median 105.8), while his results on contact run further below the physics than 88% of them. Loud bat, quieter stat line — the breakout shape; he ranks No. 10 of 20 on the breakout board.

Salary$26.0M$26.0M$26.0M

A base salary under his own reading, and never subtracted from the cash figure above: a signing bonus lands in one and not the other, so the two disagree on most men without either being wrong. And the sheet does not mark which future seasons are GUARANTEED — a club option and a projected arbitration award are both just a number here, so read past the end of the deal as his forecast rather than as money owed.

Two sources, read a month apart, put this guarantee at the same dollar. That is the check, and it passed.

The tax AAV above is his number under the CBA’s own rulebook, not the average we work out from Cot’s total. On a contract with deferred money the two come apart on purpose — and neither is subtracted from the other.
