The 85.1 mph splitter Shota Imanaga left at 2-1 to Joey Wiemer put three runs on the board before Chicago batted, and the Cubs spent the rest of the night trying to close the gap one swing at a time. Three solo home runs — two from Alex Bregman, one from Ian Happ — accounted for every run Chicago scored, on four hits total. Irvin matched Imanaga with seven strikeouts across five innings but served up both fourth-inning shots. Keibert Ruiz's two-run homer in the 8th off Hoby Milner was the blow that turned a one-run game into a three-run finish. Imanaga needed a clean first inning and did not get one.
