Brandon Lowe's grand slam in the second put Pittsburgh up five, and his solo homer in the fifth — his fifth of the year — made it 6-2. The Pirates did not score again. Jameson Taillon struck out ten across six innings but gave up six earned, with Swanson and Ballesteros homering in the third to start the climb back. José Urquidy entered the ninth with the score tied and took the loss — one out, three hits, and a walk. Lowe's fifth-inning home run was the last run Pittsburgh scored, and Chicago tied it in the eighth and won it in the ninth.
