Trent Thornton faced five batters in the seventh and the one who hurt him was Henry Davis. Davis's fourth home run of the year, a fly ball to left, was the last run either team scored. Ben Brown gave Chicago six innings of one-run ball — 83 pitches, seven strikeouts — and left with the game even. The Cubs had six hits, committed two errors, and left seven on base. Wilber Dotel gave Pittsburgh three innings of one-hit relief with four strikeouts, and Gregory Soto set the Cubs down in order on fourteen pitches to finish it.
