Gonzales's two-run shot in the third — the first of his season — gave Pittsburgh a lead they carried the rest of the way, and Ashcraft made it look simple: 80 pitches, 60 strikes, five hits, two runs. Zebby Matthews needed 100 pitches to get through four and a third, gave up seven earned, and left with the game already out of reach. Henry Davis singled home two in the fifth, and Brooks Lee added a two-run homer in the sixth. Minnesota left two men on base all game, and their three runs came late, after the Pirates had already built a nine-run cushion.
