Gerrit Cole gave up nine hits in 4.1 innings and left with five earned runs on his line — 89 pitches of a night that wouldn't end. Kevin McGonigle drove in runs in consecutive innings, Riley Greene sent one 422 feet at 107.5 mph in the 5th, and Cole was done. Framber Valdez did the rest: six innings, four hits, eight strikeouts, one run. The Yankees got a two-run homer from Amed Rosario in the 7th to pull within two, but Will Vest needed 12 pitches for the last four outs. Detroit played nine innings without an error.
