Kevin McGonigle put Detroit ahead with his ninth home run in the first, a 402-foot shot to left-center, and for four innings it looked like it might hold. Ryan Johnson gave the Angels five innings of one-run ball in his start, and the lineup chipped away — Oswald Peraza in the second, Jorge Soler's groundout in the fifth, then Neto's single in the sixth. The Angels left twelve men on base. Riley Greene's home run in the ninth brought Detroit within one, and Ryan Zeferjahn needed fifteen pitches to get the last three outs.
