David Peterson went 6.1 innings, allowed two runs, and struck out eight without walking a batter. Max Fried was sharper for longer — one run over 5.1 innings — until Fernando Cruz came in for the seventh and gave up the lead on back-to-back extra-base hits: Nico Hoerner's home run and Pete Crow-Armstrong's triple. Spencer Jones had put the Yankees ahead with his fifth homer in the top of the inning, and the lead lasted half a frame. Seiya Suzuki's RBI single, upheld on a tag challenge, gave Chicago the lead for good. The Yankees put the tying run on base in the ninth and did not score.
