Hogan Harris faced five hitters in the seventh and walked three of them. Both runs that turned the game scored without a hit — two walks forced in by a reliever who could not find the plate, and Cincinnati had the lead it would keep. Elly De La Cruz had driven in two in the fifth on a single that scored Rodríguez and McLain, and that inning was where the Reds looked like a team that believed it was going to win. Brady Singer threw 101 pitches in six innings and gave up three. Emilio Pagán came on in the ninth and gave up two hits without allowing a run — the Athletics put the tying run on base and left him there. Jacob Wilson's two-run double in the fifth had given the Athletics their only lead, and it lasted six outs.
