Daniel Lynch IV faced ten hitters in the second inning, and by the time the third out arrived the Cubs had four runs — two scoring on Pete Crow-Armstrong's single that Michael Massey threw away, and two more on Seiya Suzuki's base hit to right. Kevin Gausman gave Chicago exactly what the lead asked for: seven innings, four hits, two earned, ninety-six pitches, sixty-six for strikes. The Royals pushed twice in the eighth on Pedro Ramírez's second homer and Bobby Witt Jr.'s RBI single, but Jacob Webb struck out two in a clean ninth. Mason Black's five innings of relief deserved better than the loss attached to it.
