Zac Thornton gave the Mets five scoreless and left with a lead that was never truly safe, and the ninth inning proved why — Devin Williams allowed three hits and two runs before the last out finally landed. Marcus Semien's three-run homer in the third, on a 1-2 fastball, was the swing that built the cushion the bullpen spent. Carson Benge had two RBI singles in his first two at-bats, and the Pirates used four relievers to cover the final six innings, none of them clean enough.
