Seven innings of two-hit baseball from Clay Holmes — 93 pitches, five strikeouts — and the Cubs led 4-0 when he left. Daniel Palencia gave up three in the eighth, Jacob Webb gave up two in the ninth, and Ryan Waldschmidt's third home run of the year ended it with a man on. Ian Happ's three-run homer in the fourth, off an 84.4-mph curveball, had looked like the shot that decided it. Brandon Pfaadt gave up four in 6.2 innings and kept his club close enough to come back.
