Matthew Boyd gave up two runs in five innings and left with a one-run lead, and Daniel Palencia came in behind him and threw two innings without a baserunner — three strikeouts, twenty pitches, fifteen strikes. Michael Busch homered in the sixth on an 0-0 curveball at 81.0 mph, his twentieth of the year, and it was the run that put Chicago ahead to stay. Nick Lodolo took the loss despite going seven innings: six hits, three earned, one strikeout, and ninety pitches that added up to a line better than the result. Dansby Swanson's home run in the ninth was his nineteenth, a solo shot to left center that ended the scoring.
