From Guanare, Venezuela, Pérez debuted in the summer of 2012 and is still here at 35 — 355 major-league games, 1,255 career strikeouts, and a left arm that has outlasted a generation of prospects. This season for Atlanta he has thrown 142 innings across 30 games with a 3.04 ERA and 102 strikeouts, good for 1.5 WAR. There is no breakthrough left to find; what the engine sees is a pitcher who found his level a decade ago and has never left it.
