George Springer's first home run of the season, on a 96.7 mph fastball at 0-0, set the tone in the 1st, and the Blue Jays kept hitting fastballs out of the park. Jesús Sánchez took a 96.4 mph heater at 3-0 for a two-run shot in the 3rd, and Kazuma Okamoto did the same at 1-0 in the 4th. Eric Lauer struck out nine in 5.1 innings and gave up two runs, both on Max Muncy's homer in the 5th, and Jeff Hoffman needed ten pitches — nine strikes — to close it. Luis Morales took the loss, giving up five earned in 4.1 innings. The Athletics managed five hits and never scored after the 5th, which is a long time to wait when the pitcher on the other side has nine strikeouts in five innings.
