Connelly Early gave Boston 5.1 innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts, and for two innings it looked like it might hold up. Wilyer Abreu's two-run homer in the 4th, on an 85.5 mph slider at 3-2, was the lead. Then Greg Weissert came out of the bullpen in the 6th and Eugenio Suárez hit a three-run homer off him at 109.6 mph off the bat, 431 feet to left center. Rhett Lowder matched Early with five innings of two-run ball for Cincinnati, and the Red Sox left nine on base across the final three innings. Emilio Pagán walked one in the 9th but closed it. Boston had chances. Suárez had one swing.
