Connelly Early gave Boston 5.1 innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts, and for two innings it looked like it might hold up. Wilyer Abreu's two-run homer in the 4th, on an 85.5 mph slider at 3-2, was the lead. Then Greg Weissert came out of the bullpen in the 6th and Eugenio Suárez hit a three-run homer off him at 109.6 mph off the bat, 431 feet to left center. Rhett Lowder matched Early with five innings of two-run ball for Cincinnati, and the Red Sox left nine on base across the final three innings. Emilio Pagán walked one in the 9th but closed it.
