Four lead changes, and Ruiz was at the center of the last two. His two-run double in the fifth — his seventh of the year, on an 0-0 slider — put Washington ahead for good, and he'd already doubled in a run in the third. The Twins scored in both the fifth and seventh to answer, and both times the Nationals responded with more: three in the fifth, two in the seventh. Simeon Woods Richardson took the loss, five earned over 4.1. Minnesota left nine on base in a two-run game, and Gus Varland needed sixteen pitches, twelve strikes, to close the ninth.
