Spencer Miles is not the name you expect to start a shutout at Yankee Stadium, but he gave Toronto 4.1 innings on 63 pitches — 47 strikes — and struck out six. Varsho's first-inning double off a full-count slider at 85.4 mph scored Guerrero Jr., and that run held. Springer's seventh-inning homer, an 88.9 mph slider at 2-2, was the only other run. The Yankees' hardest contact all night was Spencer Jones's 105.7 mph single that traveled 173 feet — a ground ball. Jeff Hoffman closed it on 12 pitches, eight strikes, two strikeouts. New York trailed from the first inning on.
